  1. Peppermint (Mentha x piperita)

Peppermint tea has always been one of our favourite ways to get the senses firing with its familiar cooling quality and its ability to invigorate and recharge.

It has been the old faithful staple in our pantries, our go to at your favourite café to sip on after a meal to give our tummy’s some love (especially when we may have overindulged a smidge – I feel you), or just a beautiful caffeine-free way to snap you out of a 3pm slump (with bonus extra hydration if you are someone who struggles to get your 2 litres of water in a day). Peppermint leaves are packed with powerful essential oils containing menthol and menthone, which for centuries have been used for all sorts of things like topically for tension headaches, but why WE LOVE them is mainly as an aid for digestion particularly when there is cramping or colic, dyspepsia (indigestion), nausea, IBS, and gastritis.

And that’s not all! Peppermint also contains lovely flavonoids (such as Luteolin) and Tannins which have an antioxidant, anti-allergic, antimicrobial, and diaphoretic effect so its also not a bad idea to brew a pot if you starting to feel a bit congested.

  1. Lemon Myrtle (backhousia citriodora)

This fresh and invigorating citrus like plant is like a match made in heaven with Peppermint. Also known as Sweet Verbena, its an ingredient from a subtropical plant native to Australia and has been used for medicine and flavouring in Australia for hundreds of years.  Aside from the flavour, there are also a lot of health benefits due to the high concentration of citral in the leaves which comprise 90-98% of the essential oils. The leaves may be beneficial for digestive issues such as diarrhoea, bloating, constipation, and other digestive problems, as well as being antifungal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. Its also high in Vitamin C so a great one to include in your daily health routine to promote healing and combat colds.

  1. Lavender (Lavandula officinalis)

Its probably fair to say we can’t get enough of this one in our lives. With so many of us suffering from insomnia and anxiety, we should be bathing in it daily!

Simply inhaling Lavender at night improved the quality of sleep as shown in human trials, whilst tincture form has demonstrated potent sedative and hypnotic activities in vivo.

The essential oil contains potent chemical compounds - linalyl acetate and linalool, and their potential therapeutic effects of reducing anxiety and ability to improve mood, and even help with spasm and reducing severity of a headache has gained a lot of attention lately.

If you haven’t already, do yourself a favour and try Incorporating it as part of a night-time wind down routine.
