Little Wildling Co’s favourite Herbs for Women’s Health:
Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)
Traditionally Red Clover was used for its alterative action as a blood cleanser which has helped in cases of many congested skin conditions including acne and psoriasis, as well as in cases of cancer as adjunct therapy, and even to soothe bronchial spasm. Red Clover has more recently been involved in helping relive menopausal symptoms due to the oestrogenic effects of isoflavones. Not only a gorgeous flower to look at, but Red Clover also boasts some powerful chemical components including Isoflavones, flavanols, phenolic acids, and volatile oils.
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Our adrenal loving sweet tasting Licorice root has so many medicinal qualities and is particularly soothing to our digestive system. Licorice is a powerful Anti-inflammatory, mucoprotective, adrenal tonic, expectorant, demulcent, mild laxative, anticarcinogenic, antitussive, anti-viral, anti-ulcer, and immunomodulating herb. In terms of women’s health, it is used in clinic to treat PCOS, infertility and androgen excess (female) when paired with other beautiful herbs like Peony.
Burdock (Arctium lappa)
Burdock root is a powerful anti-inflammatory and blood detoxifier used therapeutically in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and across Europe and North America for hundreds of years. Studies have shown that burdock root consumed as a tea had a significant effect on decreasing inflammation and oxidative stress particularly in osteoarthritis, and it may also help to improve many inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis due to its ability to promote
circulation to the surface of the skin.
Withania (Withania somnifera)
We all know and love Withania for its ability to support a healthy stress response and improve physical performance, but it also plays a part in supporting female reproductive issues such as part of treating cyclic hormone fluctuations in perimenopause or declining oestrogen in menopause alongside other herbs, as well as calming the nervous system and adrenals in these stages or for PMS sufferers or assist in regulation of the HPO axis. Traditionally it was used to enhance reproductive function in men and women to promote conception.
St Marys Thistle (Silybym marianum)
Our most powerful liver trophorestorative herb has an essential role in female reproduction due to its ability to assist in the detoxification and clearance of hormones in the body, in particular the clearance of oestrogen which is primary in gynaecological complaints such as PMS. Supporting the liver is vital for healthy hormone balance. It is a strong antioxidant and hepatoprotective against toxins such as alcohol and paracetamol.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Ginger has been traditionally used as a warming herb and for being immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory. Its particularly useful when there is nausea, to soothe menstrual cramps and migraine.
